Morning at Tanjung Benoa for jet-skiing, banana boat rides, and parasailing over the bay, adrenaline before lunch is a good way to shake off jet lag. In the evening, head to Uluwatu Temple, perched dramatically on a cliff edge above the Indian Ocean. Stay through sunset for the Kecak Fire Dance, a hypnotic, torch-lit performance that's become one of Bali's defining cultural experiences.

A full day of Bali's cultural heartland. Start with the Barong Dance, a mythological battle told through masks and gamelan music, then wander Ubud's art market for handwoven textiles and woodwork. Tegallalang's rice terraces are the postcard shot everyone wants, layered green steps cut into the hillside. Round out the day with a Kintamani volcano viewpoint overlooking Lake Batur, and a stop at Tegenungan Waterfall before checking into Ubud for the night.

Ubud isn't just temples and terraces, it has an adventurous side too. White-water rafting down the Ayung River takes you through jungle gorges and past hidden waterfalls, real Class II–III rapids with guides who know the river well. If you want more, optional add-ons like ATV rides through rice paddies or the Bali Swing (that famous over-the-jungle photo swing) are available. Close the day at Sacred Monkey Forest, home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques among ancient banyan trees and stone temples.

An early fast boat crossing takes you to Nusa Penida, and this is the day most travelers remember longest. Kelingking Beach's cliff formation (nicknamed the T-Rex for its shape) is one of the most photographed spots in Indonesia. Angel's Billabong is a natural infinity pool carved into the rocks, and Broken Beach is a dramatic limestone arch opening onto the ocean. Return to Bali by evening and check into Kuta or Seminyak.

A full free day, and after five days of sightseeing, this is the one built for doing nothing in particular. Spend it at Seminyak's beach clubs with daybeds and infinity pools facing the ocean, book a spa treatment, browse the boutiques along Seminyak's main strips, or simply stay by the hotel pool. Optional water activities are available if you'd rather stay active.

East Bali moves at a different pace, quieter roads and fewer crowds. Lempuyang Temple, known worldwide as the "Gate of Heaven" for its split gateway framing Mount Agung in the background, is the day's centrepiece (queues for the mirror-pool photo can run long, so patience helps). Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a former royal palace with ornate stone fountains and koi ponds, adds a slower, more contemplative stop before heading back to Seminyak.

Morning is free, use it for last-minute souvenir shopping or another round at the beach club. In the late afternoon, head to Tanah Lot, a Hindu sea temple built on a rock formation just offshore. As the tide comes in and the sun drops behind it, this becomes one of the most photographed sunsets in Bali, and a fitting closing image for the trip.
