Shillong itself, often called the Scotland of the East, has a completely different energy — cooler, hillier, with a distinct local music scene.

Take a short boat ride, then continue to Mawlynnong, repeatedly recognized as Asia's cleanest village, where living root bridges and spotless lanes make it feel almost staged, except it isn't.

Cherrapunjee, among the wettest places on earth, delivers views that shift by the minute as clouds roll through the valleys. Mawsmai Caves offer a short, easy limestone cave walk, lit just enough to see the formations without losing the adventure of it.
