The Ultimate Sahyadri Trekking Guide for Beginners From Pune

Sahyadri Trekking Guide for Beginners

This Sahyadri Trekking Guide for Beginners is the one I wish someone had handed me before my first Sinhagad climb — boots soaking, no snacks, completely unprepared, and absolutely hooked by the time I reached the top.

At Samishaholidaysllp, we’ve taken hundreds of first-time trekkers up Maharashtra’s forts. Corporate groups who’ve never worn trekking shoes. Solo travellers are nervous about going alone. Families with teenagers who spend more time on phones than outdoors. Every single group finds something up there that surprises them.

The Sahyadri range is right outside Pune’s door. That’s the whole point.

Why the Sahyadri Range Is Perfect for Beginner Trekkers

The Western Ghats don’t ask much of beginners — not initially, anyway. Most forts near Pune sit between 800 and 1,400 metres above sea level. Trails are historically maintained, base villages have basic food and water, and ST bus connectivity from Pune’s Swargate or Shivajinagar depots reaches most trailheads.

No Himalayan permits. No acclimatisation days. Just pack your bag on Friday night and leave by 6 am Saturday.

Sahyadri Trekking Guide for Beginners — The Best Forts to Start With

Sinhagad Fort — The Beginner’s First Step

Distance from Pune: 30 kilometres via Sinhagad Road
Elevation: 1,312 metres
Trek Duration: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on route

Sinhagad is where most Pune trekking stories begin. Honestly, it’s almost a rite of passage. The main trail from Donje village is well-marked, consistently maintained, and busy enough on weekends that you’re never truly alone, which matters when you’re starting out.

The fort carries the weight of Tanaji Malusare’s legendary 1670 night assault — the battle that retook the fort for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the cost of Tanaji’s own life. Standing at the ramparts with that wind hitting your face and the Khadakwasla reservoir glittering below… it lands differently when you know the history.

What to Eat at the Top

The small stalls near Tanaji Samadhi sell fresh pithla bhakri, curd, and the famous Sinhagad taak (buttermilk). Eat it there. Don’t skip it for a protein bar.

Samishaholidaysllp Tip

We run early Saturday morning Sinhagad treks specifically for corporate groups and solo beginners — departing Pune by 5:30 am, reaching the base by 6:15 am, and summiting before the main weekend crowd arrives. The fort at 7 am, with morning mist still clinging to the valley, is a completely different experience from the noon rush.

Lohagad Fort — The Iron Fort With a Gentle Trail

Distance from Pune: 52 kilometres via Pune-Mumbai Expressway
Elevation: 1,033 metres
Trek Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour from Malavli village

Lohagad is the fort I recommend most consistently for absolute beginners. The trail from Malavli railway station — yes, you can train here directly from Pune — is paved for much of its length, gradual in gradient, and well-shaded through the monsoon season when the surrounding valley fills with green.

The fort walls and four entry gates — Ganesh Darwaja, Narayan Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja, and Maha Darwaja — are in remarkably good condition. Each gate builds anticipation for the next. By the time you walk through Maha Darwaja and the full Pavna valley panorama opens up, most first-timers go genuinely quiet for a moment.

Best Season

Monsoon. July and August turn Lohagad’s surrounding landscape into something vivid and extraordinary — waterfalls on the adjacent slopes, low cloud banks drifting through the ramparts, green so saturated it looks edited.

ST Bus Option

Buses from Pune’s Shivajinagar depot to Malavli run regularly — this makes Lohagad one of the best one-day treks near Pune fully accessible without a private vehicle.

Tikona Fort — The Triangle That Rewards the Climb

Distance from Pune: 60 kilometres via Paud Road and Pavna Dam
Elevation: 1,033 metres
Trek Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours, moderately steep final section

Tikona — meaning triangle in Marathi — earns its name from the distinctly pyramidal shape visible from the Pavna Dam road. The approach through Tikona Peth village passes small farms and a quiet rural Maharashtra that most Pune residents rarely see.

But here’s the thing about Tikona — the last 20 minutes are steep. Rock-cut steps, some of them worn smooth by centuries of footfall, require hands-on-rock scrambling in two or three sections. Nothing technical. Nothing dangerous. Just the first moment most beginners discover what their legs are actually capable of.

The Trimbakeshwar temple at the summit and the spectacular 360-degree views across the Pavna reservoir make the effort completely worthwhile.

Samishaholidaysllp Group Experience

We combine Tikona with a Pavna Dam lakeside lunch for our weekend getaway groups — the drive along the dam road after descent is one of the more scenic 20-minute stretches in the Pune district.

Visapur Fort — The Quieter Giant Above Malavli

Distance from Pune: 52 kilometres (same base as Lohagad)
Elevation: 1,084 metres
Trek Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours, forested trail

Visapur sits directly above Lohagad, connected by a ridge that makes a Lohagad-Visapur double trek one of the most satisfying beginner challenges in the Sahyadri range.

The Visapur trail from Malavli climbs through dense forest — significantly less trafficked than Lohagad’s paved path. In the monsoon, this trail runs with small streams, the canopy closes overhead, and the bhatkanti (wandering-through-forest feeling) hits properly. This is when trekking stops feeling like exercise and starts feeling like something else entirely.

The fort plateau at the top is enormous — one of the largest in Maharashtra. Crumbling cisterns, broken ramparts, and a silence broken only by wind and distant bird calls make Visapur feel genuinely remote despite being an hour from Pune.

Honest Difficulty Note

Visapur is not Sinhagad. The trail requires good footwear with ankle support and reasonable fitness. Not recommended for complete beginners as a first trek — go after you’ve done Sinhagad and Lohagad twice each.

Essential Packing List for Sahyadri Beginners

Footwear first. Always. Trail shoes or trekking shoes with a rubber grip — not sports shoes, not sandals, not canvas. The Sahyadri’s basalt rock gets extremely slippery in the monsoon.

Water — more than you think. Carry a minimum of 2 litres per person for any trek under 3 hours. Base village water isn’t always reliable in quality.

Snacks that actually work. Chikki, dates, bananas, and roasted chana hold energy better than chips or biscuits on a climb. Poha from the base village dhaba, before starting, beats any packaged breakfast.

Rain gear in the monsoon. A lightweight poncho weighs 200 grams and completely changes the experience when a cloud suddenly decides to rain directly on you at 1,200 metres.

Headlamp — even for day treks. Pre-dawn starts are common for summer treks. Fort interiors have dark passages. Always pack one.

Sahyadri Trekking Tips That Actually Matter

Start early. Always. The difference between a 6 am start and an 8 am start in Maharashtra’s summer heat is enormous. Most of our Samishaholidaysllp groups leave Pune no later than 6 am for any weekend trek.

Tell someone your plan. Share your trail, expected return time, and emergency contact with someone not on the trek. Mobile connectivity on most Sahyadri forts is unreliable — BSNL works where others don’t.

Descend before 4 pm. Monsoon evenings in the Sahyadri close fast. Visibility drops, trails get wetter, and navigation becomes genuinely difficult after 5 pm on forested routes.

Respect the forts. No plastic left on the trail. No graffiti on ancient walls. No loud music on the summit. These are protected archaeological sites — and they’re extraordinary precisely because of what they’ve survived. Treat them accordingly.

Don’t trek alone as a beginner. Join a group — either through Samishaholidaysllp’s weekend trek programme or through established Pune trekking communities. Local knowledge on trail conditions, flash flood routes, and alternate descents is genuinely important, not optional caution.
